Footpath Update from County Council
Mepal Footpath 3
Following discussion with the landowner, Cambridgeshire County Council can confirm that they will be arranging for the surface of the entrances at both ends of the footpath to be improved, most likely using some form of drainable aggregate. This is most likely to happen later in the spring.
Cambridgeshire County Council are in full sympathy with landowner in the way his field is treated:
While there is a Public Right of Way crossing the field and another running along the riverbank, it is not and should not be treated as a dog exercise field for the local community. People have a right to follow the Public Footpath, but not to wander randomly across private land. The excessive trespass away from the legal line of the Public Rights of Way, causes significant damage to hay crops.
Cambridgeshire County Council have advised the landowner, if necessary, it would be within their rights to fence of the line of the Public Footpath with electric fencing on either side. (Leaving a 4m wide strip between the two fences). We are hoping it does not have to come to this as it would be at considerable expense.
Cambridgeshire County Council will also seek to erect a number of waymark posts, ensuring the legal line of the footpath is very clear.
Please do respect the footpath and private land.
